Fecal Egg Counts

Picture
The best method to control intestinal parasites (for both your horse and your budget) is to perform a fecal egg count.

To perform this test, a fresh sample of manure is evaluated at the lab to determine what parasites are present.  We then select a deworming medication based on the organisms infesting that horse.  A follow-up fecal exam is then performed to evaluate the success of our treatment.

Performing fecal egg counts minimizes the development of resistant parasites and allows you to stop throwing money away on dewormers every 8 weeks that may not even be working.  The old method of rotating dewormers and treating every other month can often be replaced by a once or twice yearly deworming with proper monitoring.
