Colder weather is coming!

Picture
Don't forget our equine friends as the temperatures begin to drop.  Horses tend to drink less as the temperature falls.  We're all aware you can't make your horse drink, but we can make sure we lead him in all the right directions.  As it gets colder, make sure your horse's water source is free from ice, that the bucket it's contained in is clean, and if you add anything to your horse's water, please also provide a separate and unadulterated bucket of clean water as well.  Even if you're only adding electrolytes, we want to make sure nothing we add prevents our equine friend from taking a drink.

The fall and winter are excellent times to take care of  dental work.  An annual dental exam is important to make sure your horse is able to chew and utilize all that expensive feed you provide for them.  Many performance problems and even lameness can have dental issues at their core.  Contact us with any questions or to schedule an exam.

Vaccines and preventative care.
We believe that  preventative care is the foundation for a healthy horse.  The old adage, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has never been more true.

The spring visit from your veterinarian will stress the importance of vaccination to prevent disease.  For most horses, the
AAEP guidelines for core vaccines are an excellent place to start.  Sometimes, additional vaccines may be recommended depending on your horse's  location, boarding arrangement or exposure to other horses.  Vaccination against strangles, Potomac Horse Fever and other diseases should be evaluated on an individual basis.   It is always more economical to guard against a disease than to treat that disease should your horse become ill.

Deworming - the right way
better for your horse and your budget

Vaccines aren't the only reason to have a wellness visit from your veterinarian.  Evaluation for intestinal parasites and deworming should be discussed, as it is no longer recommended to simply rotate dewormers throughout the year.  To avoid resistance to deworming medications, a fecal egg count  should be performed and each horse or herd treated accordingly.

Powerfloat
A complete exam of your horse should include an oral examination.  Usually recommended annually for most horses, this exam should be completed under mild sedation with a full mouth speculum.  Most horses require a routine float once a year.

The procedure is performed using a combination of powered and hand instruments.   Our powered equipment and attachments are made by Powerfloat.  This brand of powered dental equipment is designed by large animal practitioner Dennis Rach DVM, and available only to licensed veterinarians.
